Jesus and State Sponsored Torture

As the news has hit over the past day that “torture works” I’ve had an image in my mind. There’s a dark room, with a few strategically placed lights. Perhaps I watched too much 24...

Thus Sayeth the Lord…or maybe not

I spent too much of my life in churches where a person could use the phrase “Thus says the Lord,” and whatever followed would often carry the weight of scripture. When I was younger and...

A Couple Thoughts on Short Term Missions

My first short-term missions (STM) trip took place in 1989. Our team flew to Brussels (my first time ever on a plane) and then somehow (I have no recollection) got to Namur, Belgium. There are...

Obedient Citizens

Last November each of the girls had friends over for Thanksgiving dinner. While the turkey was in the oven, the kids were sitting around the table talking. I was reading a new book about Dublin...

Stephen Fry and a Capricious God

Recently English actor Stephen Fry made news here in Ireland for answering a question on RTÉ about what he would say to God. You can watch it here. It’s less than 3 minutes, and worth your time....

Getting what we desire.

Moment of vulnerability…when I was a kid…around 11 and 12, my favourite singer was Barry Manilow. (Once I typed that I remembered that before Barry Manilow, my favourite singer was Tony Orlando. Must. Stop. Thinking....

Fasting (repost)

One of the things I like to do with the new blog is occasionally bring in some material from previous blog posts that I’ve written. I may edit and update some of them. Today’s post...

Her friend was a teen age boy without much of a church background. The kids were talking with some of the other youth in the church. Somehow, the pastor of the church discovered that the friend was new to church. So the pastor pulled the teen age boy aside and encouraged him to “be a fish, and let Jesus reel him in.”

Fitting In

I read an article this morning by Colin Woodward which breaks down the US/Canada/Mexico into 11 different nations and examines their views on violence, education, religion, government, etc. Having spent my whole life in the region Woodward calls...

Making Healthy Decisions (a pause)

A couple months ago I wrote a blog post about two key components of decision making for me and Liz. I wrote about the first rule: Wait until you and your spouse are on the same page, and NEVER pressure them. At the end of the post I said that I would write part two of that post by the end of the week. I didn’t.
